The FAA has announced that U.S. regulators will begin imposing maximum fines on people caught shining laser pointers at aircraft after incidents rose from 2,836 in 2010 to 3,592 in 2011. According to FAA research, lasers are not only a distraction to pilots in the cockpit during takeoff and landing, but they can temporarily diminish eyesight or blind pilots, sometimes damaging the eye. Under a U.S. law enacted this past February, individuals found guilty of shining lasers at aircraft can serve up to five years in jail and face $250,000 in fines.
